Resilient wedding singer from KwaDukuza gets his breakthrough at 63
First concert appearance for Sagie Govender after decades of dedication to his craft
KwaDukuza singer Sagie Govender has kept the faith for more than five decades to get a break performing on stage in front of a large crowd.
His time has finally come.
He has been invited to perform at a concert hosted by Good News Community Radio in Phoenix on October 27.
“This will be my first performance in front of such a massive crowd. I am very excited. This is a dream come true for me and I am rehearsing very hard. There must be no flaws,” Govender said.
The 63-year-old senior began singing when he was just seven years old, and joining a temple group validated his belief that he had some talent.
“It was very tough finding an audience as an individual though with no opportunities coming by.”
He kept his passion going by doing freelance performances at family weddings and birthday parties, because not having an outlet to share his love of singing simply wasn’t an option.
His dedication is finally paying off. Now, in his so-called twilight years, his signing has gained traction on community radio stations such as South Side FM and Good News Community Radio Station, which steered him towards his fist big concert performance at the end of the month.
His confidence boosted, Govender can see himself reaching greater heights.
“New opportunities will open for me in future, like performing in churches. I can’t wait.”
