One killed in N2 head-on collision near Mandeni

A third car was unable to avoid the accident and also crashed into the wreckage.

A man in his 40s was killed in a head-on collision on the N2 near Mandeni earlier this afternoon, which left five others injured.

The man was driving northbound and collided with a car travelling in the opposite direction that was knocked off the highway and down a nearby embankment.

A third car was unable to avoid the accident and also crashed into the wreckage.

“Five people have sustained injuries ranging from critical to minor,” said IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson, Samantha Meyrick.

She thanked the Rural Metro Fire Department, EMRS and other private services for their assistance.

The accident happened near the scene of the fatal bus accident which claimed nine lives, including a four-year-old child, on Sunday.

That accident prompted calls for greater safety measures on the stretch of road, which has long been a high-accident zone.

The road was open in both directions at time of print, although traffic is affected. Police will investigate.

Residents are urged to exercise caution while driving in poor weather conditions.
