Capturing North Coast beauty with the Ballito Photo Club
The club’s June winners showcased a wide variety of stunning images.
The Ballito Photo Club lit up Simbithi Country Club with a vibrant display of talent during its monthly competition.
June’s event featured 77 compelling images from 46 local photographers and drew both enthusiasts and professionals, celebrating technical skill and artistic expression.
Accredited national photo judge and club member Brian Williams led the evaluations, offering expert critique across categories. Guest speakers Pamela White, Nicola Paul and Rung Button shared insights from their recent photography workshop in Istanbul, Türkiye.

Rung Button explored the complexities of low-light photography, emphasising the delicate balance between ISO, shutter speed and aperture.
Nicola Paul showcased her artistic Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) shots and captivating portraits of Istanbul’s famed street cats. Pamela White addressed the ethics of photography, highlighting the importance of respect and consideration when photographing alongside others.

The competition followed the Photographic Society of South Africa’s ranking system, where photographers progress from one-star beginners to senior levels based on performance. Higher-ranked members face more rigorous judging standards.
Winners included:
Margot Bayne, who won the set subject category, Gates and Fences, with Gate to Tranquility. Judge’s comment: “A compelling scene with the open gate and the path inviting one into the forest; well exposed and composed.”

Brian Roberts, who took the Senior and Visual Art categories with Pencil on Pastel, and the Mono Open category with Smiling Zebra. Judge: “The texture of the elephant can almost be felt.”


Nicolette Forbes, who claimed Top Junior and Nature (Birds only) for Gandalf the Grey. Williams praised its “sharp detail and vibrant presentation.”

Caro Smith, who won the Colour Open category with Thoughtful Child.

Avril Eshmade, who triumphed in Nature (No birds) and Scapes with Rhino Adder Looking for Prey and Ballito Beach Sunrise.

Nicola Paul, who won the Photojournalism category with Everybody Focusing.
