Whether looking down at game or plants or up at the night sky, these have you covered.

Whether you are heading to Botswana for game viewing, birdwatching or stargazing, these compact and informative guides are the perfect companions for every nature lover and adventurer.

Wildlife of Botswana, a photographic guide – Penguin R380

A trip to Botswana is a wonderful way to view wildlife up close, from the Big Five and many other animals, to abundant bird life and forests of trees and plants.

On a recent trip we travelled through a wide variety of terrains – desert and savanna, salt pans and river deltas – and found the book “Wildlife of Botswana, a photographic guide” hugely helpful in identifying the many species of flora and fauna that were new to us in Botswana and northern Namibia.

This handy-sized book is an all-in-one photographic guide to 550 of the country’s most common and interesting mammals, birds, reptiles, invertebrates and plants. Each photo is accompanied by a brief text and describing where best seen, all well indexed. An essential companion to a traveller to the region.

Birds of Botswana: A pocket guide – Struik R270

With more than 600 bird species, Botswana is one of Africa’s premier birding destinations. This easy-to-use compact guide features 360 of the most common birds. Colour photos are accompanied by concise and clear identification text, call descriptions and favoured habitats, as well as an index of common and scientific names.

This is a handy and quick reference to use in the confines of a vehicle as well as being small and light enough to fit into a back pocket. Very useful.

Night Skies of Botswana – Struik R280

What better place than the vast open plains of Botswana, sparsely populated and free of light pollution, to view the cathedral of our night skies. This handy paperback is ideal for beginner and amateur stargazers. All stars described can be seen with the naked eye, binoculars and telescopes are not necessary.

The book introduces astronomical concepts, describing our galaxy and the Earth’s place in it. It has four monthly star charts (views from north, south, east and west), with supporting descriptions of the stars and constellations. The star charts can be used anywhere in southern Africa.

Botswana’s ancestral stories about the stars are scattered throughout the book, honouring indigenous interpretations of the night sky and giving the book a unique African flavour.
