Ballito plumber wins gold at inaugural South African Plumbing Olympics

The event proved to be one of the highlights of the African Plumbing Indaba in Johannesburg.

Ballito’s Barry Chapman installed, fitted and connected his way to gold at the inaugural South African Plumbing Olympics last week.

The Chapman Plumbing owner was one of eight professional plumbers from around the country who competed in the event in Emmarentia, Johannesburg, on July 22 and 23. Hosted by the Plumbing Industry Registration Board and the Institute of Plumbing South Africa, the event formed part of the wider South African Plumbing Indaba.

Working with apprentice plumbers, the eight competitors had to install a toilet, basin, shower and geyser, along with the relevant piping. They were scored on their installations, which had to follow specific layout rules, while communication and mentorship also played a crucial role.

“It was absolutely awesome, I loved it!” said Barry, who teamed up with apprentice plumber Edwin Magudulela.

“We had plenty of fun and laughs, and it was an overall amazing experience.”

Barry and Edwin’s PPP team finished first on 156.5 points, while Team Grizzly (141.75) and Cape Royals (119) rounded out the top three.
