The April holidays were jam-packed with activities for Protec pupils, who participated in a variety of workshops.
“In today’s world computer literacy is essential and our aim is to ensure that every Protec pupil is equipped with these vital skills,” said Protec Tongaat manager, Marion Takis.
Protec pupils without computer literacy skills attended a Beginners Computer Workshop where they learned how to operate Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point, while also familiarising themselves with the basics of the internet.
Several grade 10 and 11 pupils also participated in a bridge building workshop.
“The aim of Protec is to prepare young people, with the interest and ability, for successful entry into engineering, science and technological careers and this workshop gave them the opportunity to test their skills and aptitude in engineering concepts,” said Takis.
Using strips of balsa wood and a putty-adhesive, the pupils designed and built a bridge that could carry a heavy load.
The top two teams will participate in the SAICE KZN schools bridge building competition in August this year.
In addition, grade 11 pupils participated in a water conservation workshop where they were taught about the scarcity of water, properties of water, and the importance of conserving this valuable resource.
They also enjoyed a visit from Science Centre, who conducted practical demonstrations to explain concepts such as Newton’s 2nd Law and acceleration due to gravity.
The grade 12s, meanwhile, focused on academic enrichment in mathematics and physical and life sciences, with the highlight being a visit to UKZN Westville campus.
“All these programmes are designed to prepare our pupils for successful entry into careers that need maths and science such as engineering. As a non-profit organisation we are entirely dependent on the generosity of our sponsors and it is thanks to them that we are able expose these young people to these exciting opportunities,” said Takis.
