Ashton International College recently held its annual Sports and Cultural Awards Function, to celebrate the achievements pupils who have shone on the sports field and dazzled on the stage.
On the night a total of 88 students were honoured for achievements in 22 different sporting and cultural codes either offered by Ashton, or recognised by the school.
Half colours are awarded to pupils for selection and participation in a district team, full colours for selection and participation in a provincial team and honours are awarded to students selected for participation at national level.
“We are extremely proud of our students who strive to achieve academically, on the sports field and culturally. For a young school only in it’s fifth year, the talent, character and spirit of the students is to be applauded,” said Joe Erasmus, Ashton College executive head, who added his thanks to the Lifestyle Centre and Superspar for their continued support of the school’s sports teams.
For the Cum Laude Award, which is the most prestigious, a white blazer is awarded to a student who represents their country at international level. This year the Cum Laude Award was bestowed on Danelle van der Linde who was the vice captain of the U17 action netball team that competed in Australia. Before representing South Africa in netball, Van der Linde, who is a form four pupil, has also represented KZN in both hockey and netball between 2012 and 2014 as well as in action netball between 2012 and 2015.
Honours were awarded to Callum Osborne for road cycling and being awarded medals at the SA Nationals, Zoe Frank for lifesaving and swimming, Megan Bates for earning medals at the lifesaving nationals, Cameron Pennell for medals in swimming and selection in the Youth Squad and Benjamin Habig for karting and participation at the Rotax World Finals in Spain.
More honours were granted to Dylan Somerville for swimming, Katelyn Baird and Courtney Sardinha for their involvement in the KZN Youth Choir which went on tour to Russia, Tyla Vilela for karate and having competed in the Croatia Youth Cup.
“This is a proud moment indeed for the Ashton family. The students have used their God-given talents, and being able to recognise their phenomenal success was extremely gratifying,” said Flick Holmes, junior college head, who echoed Erasmus’ pride in the pupils.
