A journey to success

Having a driver's licence is one of the essential requirements in most job applications, but a luxury that few from vulnerable communities can afford.

The road to employment is looking brighter for a group of KwaDukuza youth who will soon learn how to drive for the first time.

Having a driver’s licence is one of the essential requirements in most job applications, but a luxury that few from vulnerable communities can afford.

With the help of Avon Peaking Power Plant, situated in Shakaskraal, a number of young people will soon take their learner’s tests and begin taking lessons behind the wheel of a car.

One of the beneficiaries, Dumisani Chili, said the young men and women were thankful for the opportunity and were doing their best to make the most of it.

“We meet for a few hours every day at the Nkobongo Hall to study our K53 study guides. We will take the test in two weeks and we hope that everyone will pass.

“For many of us, this will be our first experience of driving a car and we are very excited. We really hope to be more employable or at least to create jobs for ourselves once we have a driver’s licence.”

Avon Peaking Power Plant community liaison officer Jabulile Motlhako said the driving programme covered people from vulnerable areas that are close to the plant.

“Unemployed people between the ages of 18-35 years old were selected from Etete, Nkobongo, Driefontein and Shayamoya. We worked with the KwaDukuza municipality during the selection process. The thought process behind this initiative is to give something sustainable and empowering back to the community.”
