It was a day of excitement for the pupils of Protec Tongaat, as the bright sparks of the school were awarded on Friday.
Protec held its annual awards day at the Tongaat Secondary School Hall where Simone Singh and Minenhle Mchunu (top grade 11 English), Nondumiso Shandu (top overall girl in grade 12), Nomalanga Langa (top physics and top overall in grade 11), Kwasa Makhanya (top physics and top overall in grade 12) and Siyabonga Dube (top math in grade 12) walked away with the most awards.
Nomalanga Langa (16) said it all came down to hard work. Langa got 99% in mathematics.
The soft-spoken girl from Hambanathi is a grade 11 pupil at Nkosimbovu Secondary School and she wants to study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town after matric.
“Since I joined Protec there has been a drastic improvement in my marks, especially in maths and physics,” said Langa.
Tongaat branch manager Marion Takis thanked all the stakeholders, especially the donors, for their support, which has enabled Protec Tongaat to not only survive over the past 26 years but also grow, extend and enrich their programmes.
“We hope that today you can feel how deeply grateful the pupils are for being given the opportunity to attend Protec,” said Takis.

Takis also congratulated the pupils on their courage, determination and perseverance in overcoming the many challenges they face and urged grade 12 pupils to continue striving to be the best that they can be.
“Remember the road to success is seldom an easy or straight one so do not let the fear of failure cripple you. When you fall, remember that F stands for Feedback, an opportunity to Find your mistakes and Fix them so that you can Forge ahead and Follow your dreams.”
Protec is a math, science and technology career development and enrichment programme that prepares young people with the interest and ability for successful entry into science, engineering and technological careers.
