Ashton College Ballito swimmers show their mettle at SA open water champs

Van der Linde also had a podium finish in the 7.5km race, qualifying for selection to represent South Africa at the junior world open water championships in the Seychelles later this year.

Grade 11 Ashton International College Ballito swimmers and ASA Swimming Club members Sven van der Linde and Jaryd Holton, recently competed in the SA open water championship in Jeffrey’s Bay.

Competing in the 3km men’s event, Holton finished 8th overall in a time of 36 minutes and 43 seconds and walked away with a silver medal in his age group.

Van der Linde also had a podium finish in the 7.5km race in a time of 1 hour 34 minutes and 18 seconds. By finishing second he qualified for selection to represent South Africa at the junior world open water championships in the Seychelles later this year.

Both also competed in the 5km event, Van der Linde securing another podium finish in the 17 to 18 age category in a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 19 seconds, with Holton not far behind in fifth place in the same category and 17th overall.

Both are coached by Ashton’s head coach Mel Lawrence.
