Check mate! Ashton Ballito pupils claim top African chess honours
Jorah Soojay made history with a perfect score at the African Schools Individual Chess Championship in Mombasa.
Two Ballito teens checkmated the continent, taking gold and silver at Africa’s top school chess tournament in Kenya.
Jorah Soojay (16) and Weilun Yan (17) of Ashton International College Ballito outplayed hundreds of competitors at the 2025 African Schools Individual Chess Championship in Mombasa last month, earning first and second place in the U17 division.
Soojay made history by going unbeaten among 1 109 players, finishing with a flawless 9 out of 9 score at the championship.
The Grade 11 pupil said it was a joyous occasion, and he was thrilled with his result.
“I am proud of my achievement. I’m grateful to God and everyone who supported me,” he said.
“It was an amazing accomplishment in such a prestigious tournament. The most memorable moment was winning my last game and attending the prize-giving – everyone was celebrating.”

Chess South Africa celebrated Soojay’s achievement.
“Chess South Africa salutes you, Jorah! Your success brings immense pride and joy to the entire chess community and the nation at large,” said the national governing body in a statement.
“You have become a role model to young South Africans, proving that hard work, discipline and passion can lead to greatness. Your performance lifts the spirit of chess in South Africa and inspires the next generation of champions. We are beyond proud and excited for your future.”
Weilun Yan placed second with an impressive 7.5 out of 9. Despite his silver medal, he told the Courier he believes he can do even better.
“Nothing feels better than seeing dedication turn into success. There’s room for improvement, so we’ll get back to work once my schoolwork is settled,” he said.
Yan said his most memorable moment was the prize-giving and the emotions that came with it.
“It was my first time placing on the international stage, so it was truly special. Wearing the South African flag on stage and singing the national anthem is an experience I’ll never forget – and one I’ll be striving to achieve again.”
