Penzance edges Curro Salt Rock in junior athletics season opener

Curro’s programme now shifts into a busy phase as athletes prepare for a series of upcoming athletics tours, district trials, and the prestigious Curro Podium.

Curro Salt Rock opened their athletics season with a strong all-round performance last Saturday (January 31) in an inter-schools meeting against Penzance Primary School.

Despite Curro’s consistency across the U8 to U13 boys’ and girls’ divisions, Penzance ultimately edged ahead on the medal tally, securing the overall trophy with a 63-40 victory.

Head of primary school sport and director of the athletics programme, Phelelani Mtembu, said the event was about far more than the final medal count, highlighting the importance of competitive opportunities early in the year.

“Interschools athletics is the foundation of our sport, where future champions are first discovered,” Mtembu said.

“We are proud to have strong support structures, such as Dolphin Coast Striders, who have become the backbone of our athletics project.”

Despite finishing second on the medal table, Curro claimed 40 medals on a hot and humid afternoon on the North Coast.

Curro’s programme now shifts into a busy phase as athletes prepare for a series of upcoming athletics tours, district trials, and the prestigious Curro Podium – one of the largest school athletics events in South Africa.

The Northern and Southern regional trials will culminate in the Grand Finale, scheduled for February 13 and 14 at Pilditch Stadium in Tshwane, where the school hopes to showcase its growing depth.

Mtembu said Curro aims to build on last year’s progress by strengthening structures, broadening participation, and nurturing promising young athletes.

“We want to build a solid pipeline that will feed quality athletes into KZN district and provincial teams,” he said.

“Curro Salt Rock is proud to lead this initiative and partner with more schools in shaping the future of athletics.”
