Ballito rider claims top KZN showjumping honours

Ballito's Emma-Rose Marais and her pony, Ready for Roses, will represent the province at the 2026 South African Youth Showjumping Championships at the end of June.

Reddam House Ballito’s Emma-Rose Marais and her pony, Ready for Roses, were awarded the KZN Open Pony Rider Victor Ludorum at last month’s KZN Showjumping Awards.

Hosted at Maxwell’s Equestrian Centre in Mooi River on May 15, the awards ceremony also saw the pair receive full KZN colours. They will represent the province at the 2026 South African Youth Showjumping Championships, which will be held at Shongweni Club near Hillcrest at the end of June.

The 15-year-old Grade 9 pupil and her talented pony have quickly risen through the provincial rankings and are currently the highest-ranked open pony rider combination in KZN.

Affectionately known as “The Rosies”, the pair train with Deirdre Fox at Summerveld near Botha’s Hill and have built a special partnership over the past year while competing at the highest level of pony classes.

The pair will represent KZN at the 2026 SA Youth Showjumping Championships held at Shongweni Club this month.

Emma-Rose is also developing a young mare, Rivervale Deja Vu, as she continues to build her future in the sport.

Ready for Roses, a former racing pony, has successfully transitioned into showjumping, where she has flourished in her second career.

“It’s been the most incredible journey with my heart horse,” said Emma-Rose.
“Everyone calls me Rosie, and that just happens to be the name of my thoroughbred pony.”

The Rosies competing last year at the KZN Closed Championships at Shongweni Club in November.

Competing in open classes, the Rosies tackle heights of up to 1.15m, navigating technically demanding courses that include water jumps, triple combinations and walls.

One of their most memorable experiences this year was competing at Waterwoods in Fort Nottingham on courses designed by Olympic course designer Bernardo Costa Cabral.

“Rosie means the world to me and has exceeded every dream I’ve had for both of us,” said Emma-Rose.
