I have lived most of my life in the area of Etete, between Shakaskraaal and Groutville.
I have had to face the challenge of crossing the R102 on my way to and from the shops, school, church, relatives etc, which I have never looked forward to doing.
When I was younger there were far fewer cars on roads, but despite that I have witnessed or heard of numerous people who lost their lives on this road.
Every morning and afternoon I watch in horror as community members, young and old, try to safely cross the R102 while vehicles speed up and down, mostly with little regard for pedestrians. What I don’t understand is why our area is yet to have speed calming measures (humps) installed. How many lives will it take before something is done?
Another thing that makes the situation more dangerous is the lack of enforcement of traffic laws and by-laws by our traffic police. Minibus taxis do not use designated stopping areas to pick up and drop passengers and this results in very dangerous situations where visibility is drastically reduced for all concerned, motorist and pedestrians alike.
It is easy to see that a couple of humps along this road will make this road far safer and greatly reduce the possibility of further loss of life.
We currently have a community member in the employ of KwaDukuza municipality who assists school children with crossing the road and not to sound disrespectful towards him as I do know him personally, he is very timid, to say the least.
However I do not blame him for that, because, quite frankly I’d probably be feeling hesitant myself considering the disregard motorists show for his presence. I am also not certain as to how much training he received prior to him assuming his duties.
My views on this matter are shared by many in the community and it is worth pointing out the obvious fact that neighbouring settlements. Ntshawini, Melville, Groutville and Shakaskraaal do have humps installed. At the expense of sounding political or inciting anarchy, I shall also point out that these places are generally more militant and are not shy in turning violent if their issues are not addressed. Perhaps we should be looking at following their lead as well, which has been discussed by some members of the community and which I, personally am against.
