The recent letter in the North Coast Courier (Good men are scarce, February 5) demeaning world icon Mahatma Gandhi cannot go unchallenged.
Nelson Puckree has now become the mouthpiece of the ANC which smacks of political opportunism just before the local government elections.
His assertion that Gandhi has done nothing for the town and would lobby to change Mahatma Gandhi street to Vivian Reddy street and give him the freedom of the town is poorly conceived with a political agenda which will backfire.
We acknowledge the contribution made by Vivian Reddy toward development of the town and helping the poor, but to rubbish Gandhi’s contribution to our country and the world through non-violence campaigns has been recognised throughout the world including KwaDukuza.
His spirit and enormous efforts to build the nation in times of injustice was prevalent and endured great suffering through the system brought about the transformation agenda we enjoy today.
We also know of Vivian Reddy’s close association with the ANC and (that he has) won millions of rands of tenders through an open process including the development of the golf course in KwaDukuza.
I am hopeful Vivian Reddy will distance himself from the unwanted controversy and will not stoop so low wanting recognition for his contribution.
