Reply to letter “Traffic cops make traffic worse”.
Mr Govender from Tongaat expressed his frustration for being stuck in the morning traffic at the Alberlito Hospital robot. He then accuses the cops (traffic officers) for causing the traffic delays, then he says the traffic officers should be going to the taxi rank where they should be issuing fines to taxi drivers cutting into lanes and obstructing the traffic.
This is a typical South African phenomenon where we place blame on others ie the traffic officers and the taxi drivers who, by the way, have nothing to do with the traffic congestion in the mornings and afternoons outside the Ashton College gate.
The cause of the pandemonium are the parents that do not abide by the rules. Firstly, vehicle signal indicators are not used causing unnecessary delays as drivers do not know the intention of other drivers. Secondly, drivers do not go around the circle but make a U-turn around the island cutting off all the other vehicles.Thirdly, blockage of the traffic wanting to get to the hospital or Seaward Estate results from not using the correct lane. Fourthly, these are the most dangerous drivers. They go into The Well parking, speed through and then try and push their way into the queue of vehicles waiting to go around the circle. They also endanger pedestrians walking in the parking area. I don’t understand how these people have such a total and utter disregard for other road users.
The Ashton College management have an obligation to resolve this situation outside their gates.
Maybe this is where the traffic officers should be issuing fines to these offenders.
I apologise for generalising as there are parents that obey the rules but they are the minority.
Getting back the taxi drivers and the taxi rank. When the Ballito Drive was revamped, why was no turning signal installed at the traffic light for the traffic turning right?
This is the reason for the taxi drivers and road users frustration as the taxi exits the taxi rank, has to then cut across into the right hand lane in order to turn right at the traffic light. Because other road users do not give taxis a gap to crossover, the taxi takes the left lane and two lanes have to turn at the traffic light causing a danger for drivers wanting to turn left from the M4. Taxi drivers are not the most courteous drivers but are unjustly accused for all types of offenses.
We can all solve this traffic conundrum by respecting other drivers and ourselves!
