As a newcomer to the area, I have a conundrum I’d like to bounce off the broader community.
I have been attempting to make contact with locals concerning what some are calling the ‘emerging spirituality conversation’ – but to no avail. In brief, over the centuries, Christendom has evolved through different stages – common forms being Catholics; Protestants; Orthodox; Evangelicals; Charismatics; House-church etc.
In general, the shared starting point for these groups is the ‘fall of humankind’ and the resultant theory of original sin. This essentially implies all humans are out of sync with the Creator at birth, and need to repent of their rotten core to find relief and acceptance.
But what if there is a different starting point? What if the narrative most of us have bought into just doesn’t fully represent God’s story? As I understand it, the emerging conversation is an enquiry in this direction. The conversation is not so much a protest (as in Protest-antism), but rather seeks to explore a fresh story-line. What if the original sin issue is not the beginning of the story – but that original goodness is the real starting point?
I would love to hear from those of you who are engaging in this conversation.
