The mayor of KwaDukuza, Mr Ricardo Mthembu, hosted a meeting with the angry community of Shakashead on Saturday, February 27. The community was crystal clear that they don’t want the current ward councillor, Mr Jetro Banda, to remain in his post any longer.
According to my knowledge, the community of Shakashead has been singing this song for decades but no-one would listen them. What is devastating is that instead of Mr Mthembu resolving the dispute by removing Mr Banda, he said he will pass all the grievances to the provincial leadership of the party. What is stopping him from sorting this out? Can’t the leadership see in the papers what was happening in this area?
The main question is, who is bigger – the party or the people who vote for it? Listen to the voters when they say they don’t want Councillor Banda. Passing on the people’s grievances to the provincial leaders is just a waste of time. This will just lead to more violence in the area.
This is not Zimbabwe or Uganda where a leader must hold the position for decades. So to end all the disputes, let the community elect their own leader.
