Regarding the recent article about the reduction in the speed limit in Ballito from 60 to 40km/hr (CPF wants 40km/h speed limit for Ballito, Courier, April 1), I agree with them that speeding is a problem, but disagree with their suggestion as a possible solution.
The problem is not the speed limit, but rather the enforcement of it. It matters not whether the speed limit is 60 or 40 or even 10 if people are driving 80 anyway. A better solution might be to find a way to fund better enforcement of the speed limit we currently have in place. It would be an understatement to say that the Umhlali SAPS are stretched a bit thin.
On that note, speeding is not the only way in which the traffic laws are being broken. I have never witnessed someone being pulled over for speeding in Ballito aside from “traps”, nor for failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, talking/texting while driving, or any number of terrible driving offences that occur here on a daily basis.
Everyone you speak to agrees that “Ballito is full of terrible, inconsiderate drivers”, but people tend to do what they want when there is no penalty for their transgressions.
