Two years ago Martha Nevis and Roz Burgess decided there was a need in the area for the African ladies to learn to sew, so they started the Salt Rock Sewing Centre.
Every Thursday afternoon at the Salt Rock Library, anything up to 20 ladies are busy sewing.
Roz Burgess, a very experienced sewing teacher, gives of her time to teach these ladies, from making patterns to the finished article. The standard of sewing is very high. They are also taught crochet, knitting, embroidery etc.
The aim of the centre is for the ladies to be self-supporting, also to teach others their sewing skills. The Wednesday Club has been able to help them with new Bernina sewing machines and other items. But they are looking for anyone who has an electric machine in good working order for them to use at home, also any sewing items, scissors, sewing pins, No80/85 machine needles, material, will be so welcome.
