DJ’s records – DJ Reed

It is re-assuring to discover that our faith is defensible in the face of the onslaught.

The big question that is being asked by many thinking people, especially university students is: “Are faith in God and science at war with each other?” In other words we are being asked to choose between science and God.

” …the world with all its earthly wisdom failed to perceive and recognise and know God by means of its own philosophy …” (1 Corinthians 1:21a AMP).

The apostle Peter strongly recommends: “Always be ready to give a logical defence to anyone who asks you to account for the hope that is in you, but do it courteously and respectfully.” (1 Peter 3:15b AMP).

It is re-assuring to discover that our faith is defensible in the face of the onslaught. It is not blind faith. We have vast amounts of convincing evidence for our faith. I look forward to this conversation, in the coming editions of The North Coast Courier.

Much of the recent attack on faith has come from reports of spectacular claims of some highly respected scientists, who have made it their mission to undermine belief in God. Scientists such as: Richard Dawkins and Stephen Hawking.

They say: “A case can be made that faith is one of the world’s great evils, compared to the smallpox virus, but harder to eradicate. Faith, being belief that isn’t based on evidence, is the principle vice of any religion.” Dawkins. And “God did not create the universe” and “Because there is a law of gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing” and “Religion is a fairy story for those who are afraid of the dark.” Hawking.

Professor John Lennox, at Oxford, was asked to comment on this. He replied: “Atheism is a fairy story for those who are afraid of the light.”

In spite of the loud adversarial voices opposed to faith, by far the majority of scientists do believe in God. Consider the following Nobel Peace Prize Winners: 65% are Christians; 22% are Jewish and only 10.5% claim to be Atheists.

The serious study of science owes its beginnings to people of faith. Scientists such as: Izaak Newton, Kepler and Galileo. In Newton’s most famous book in history, on science, “Principia Mathematica”, he said he hoped his work would “persuade the thinking people to believe in God”.

“Faith in God did not hinder the progress of modern science; it was the motor that drove it.” John Lennox.
