Consumer Affairs – Glenda Thompson

Parents feel pressurised to spend money on the latest fads or technologies and working parents who have little quality time to spend with their kids feel even greater psychological pressure to compensate for this with lavish gifts and offerings.

Give a gift with a difference.

The Christmas Season is here – and it is a matter of debate as to whether the “Goose is Getting Fat” or “Parents bank balances are getting thin”!

The pressure on parents to “splash the cash” on elaborate gifts for their own children and other kids is on! With retail stores bombarding us from every angle, advertisers recognising kids as powerful target markets and filling their heads with “must have’s”, and our Christmas bonuses are being spent on toys or gizmo’s that are soon forgotten and, in the long term, offer very little value to our children.

Parents feel pressurised to spend money on the latest fads or technologies and working parents who have little quality time to spend with their kids feel even greater psychological pressure to compensate for this with lavish gifts and offerings.

Right or wrong, it is the world that we live in. And right or wrong, many company employees spend their Christmas bonuses on these consumer expectations.

So how about doing something different for your employees and their children for Christmas? How about offering a gift that will add value to their future? We spoke to Lesa Bradshaw from Bradshaw Le Roux about an idea that they have for employees.

Said Lesa, “How about offering the gift of a Career Guidance Assessment for employees with children who are choosing their subjects for matric, or who are in matric and have no idea what they want to do with their lives?”

The benefits?

· Provides a valuable gift that cannot be sucked into the “gift spend void.”

· Empowers your employees and their children to make the right choices in their careers, in line with their interests, opportunities and potential.

· Helps prevent wasted money and time with children starting the wrong degrees or not finishing courses due to a lack of interest.

· Provides tax benefits for both the employer and employee.
