One of KZN’s largest land owners, Tongaat Hulett, has just unveiled a “Retire to KZN” initiative with the objective to establish Durban as one of the country’s major retirement nodes.
Extensive research undertaken by Tongaat Hulett Developments indicates that Durban has the majority of characteristics which retired people seek including the warm climate, beaches, outdoor lifestyle, leisure opportunities and quality of life.
Quality of life is vitally important for retired people and with the emphasis now on “active ageing,” retirees want to live in an area that offers or is close to all the necessary amenities that suit this sector.
A social network campaign formed one aspect of their research where more than 15 000 people, who would retire or were retired, interacted with the campaign. According to Rory Wilkinson, planning director at Tongaat Hulett Developments, this campaign also gave an indication of what people want when they retire.
Tongaat Hulett own large tracts of land between the Sibaya Complex and Tinley Manor Beach along the North Coast. The company said they can put up more than 200 000 homes, many of which would be retirement homes. Tongaat Hulett therefore plans to create new retirement opportunities, and promote KwaZulu-Natal as the ultimate retirement destination.
Tongaat-Hulett, however, does not build homes or developments, but owns large tracts of prime land that are suitable for development. They will now be focusing on working with partner developers where Tongaat Hulett will offer land to identified developers and utilise their research information.
Tongaat Hulett is presently involved in at least two developments of retirement homes in the Durban area and is also working on another development plan. Wilkinson said the homes built would cater for different market segments, including middle income and the upper end.
Currently there is a shortage of retirement homes in KZN, with Howick having the widest range of options. This development planning will therefore be good news for those who are now planning to retire, making KZN a prime choice.
