Letters: Why give Trump a chance?

In response to the letter from Lolly Mackenzie regarding Donald Trump (Give Trump a chance, Letters, April 21): First, to claim Trump is “the man the voters of America wanted” is disingenuous. He actually lost the popular vote by approx. 2.8 million votes – more than five times greater than the vote deficit in any other American election in history. Further to that – it was American’s distaste for “the establishment” that garnered so much support for an outsider, rather than love for Trump.
Trump supporters are infamous for deflecting from the real issues. Rather than debate an issue on its merits, simply cast aspersions on their opponents: “You think Trump is bad – look at Hillary and Obama!”Sounds a lot like: “Zuma is not corrupt, it’s just those seeking to divide us / White Monopoly Capital / racists”.
Give Trump a chance? Why not give Zuma a chance?
There are countless examples of how Trump has got in way over his head “Who knew health care was so complicated?” and backed down from his campaign promises “Obamacare is awful – it’s gone”, “Hillary is going to jail!”, “China is devaluing their currency to undercut American industry – we’re going to straighten them out”.
His refusal to present his tax returns, his disregard of the rules of a blind trust, his shady past business dealings where everyone takes the hit except him, his six previous bankruptcies, his extreme vanity, his tiny hands. . . the list goes on, but leaves one with the feeling that this is not someone our children should aspire to be.
I’ve often heard “Trump is a good business man (see previous comments regarding bankruptcies), therefore he’ll be good at running the country”. His business past is dubious to say the least, but claiming that his skill in real estate translates into skill in politics, is much like saying that someone’s struggle credentials makes them qualified to run a government ministry, or SOE.
“Don’t focus on Trump’s past”? Definitely not, because that may predict his future actions, and who wants that?
At the end of the day, you mustn’t construe my opposition to Trump as support for Hillary. Both were bad options, in my opinion. However, to have a person of such low character as Donald Drumpf in such a high position really shows how bad things have gotten. I’m all for changing the (broken) American political system, but not with a man like that at the helm.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” – JFK
“Grab them by the p***y” – Donald Trump
