While some might think it hocus pocus, the new therapeautic reflexologist in town swears by treatment from the feet upwards.
Ballito’s Dawn Kruger said therapeutic reflexology is often confused with a foot massage or “reflexology” done in a spa or beauty salon.
“We work with a special finger technique and firm pressure on the reflex points of the feet which corresponds with all the organs and glands. It is a registered profession and 13 medical aid funds in the country reimburse their clients for reflexology treatments,” said Kruger who is registered with the Allied Health Professions Council of SA as well as The South African Reflexology Society.

Critics of reflexology will be surprised to see their feet light up in red and yellow after Kruger puts her special boot on you, which she tightens putting pressure on your foot.
Kruger reads the red and yellow patches which represent certain areas in the body.
“The Vacuflex Concepts is a vacuum boot combined with a vacuum cupping treatment on the major acupressure points of your feet which results in the faster normalisation and healing process through the body.”
She said just about anyone can use reflexology which can help with the following health problems: allergies, insomnia, arthritis, asthma, back problems, diabetes, blood pressure, bowel and gynecological disorders, stress and thyroid imbalance.
“It is important to remember that reflexology does not heal or cure a condition, it stimulates the reflexes and assists the body in healing itself.”
Depending on the level of toxins and impurities in your body, she said you can feel anything from calm or even energised after a treatment to having a day or two of cold like symptoms, increased urination, temporary worsening of symptoms, increased sweating, dizziness or aggravated skin breakouts.
“These symptoms are a necessary part of the body’s healing and cleansing process. As you continue with the reflexology treatments over four to eight weeks, the symptoms will reduce.”
