Perspective: Five things I love about Ballito

'In the summertime when the weather is hot, you can stretch right up and touch the sky'.

The Dolphin Coast is an incredible place and I just love living here. Here are five reason’s why:

Life is a holiday

Blue skies and sandy shores.

“You are so lucky to live here!” is the constant refrain I hear from visitors. Something worth remembering. It is too easy to get sucked in with the complainers and forget to see the beauty all around us.

Living in Ballito means a steady stream of “vaalies” (a.k.a people who drive too slowly and have never heard of sunscreen).

Without them our town would not have had the right to exist.

A little bit of festive traffic certainly makes me appreciate the complete lack of real traffic jams (like the ones our Jo’burg family tell us about) for the rest of the year and seeing people flock into town is always a great reminder that we live in a special place.

What’s up, beaches?

Ballitonians have a sense of humour. (Thank you Nando’s for making me smile every time I headed down Ocean Drive this past December and mores the pity as the advert is gone now).

While every town has a few beaches, we have the real thing and the beach is always there for you, if you choose to get out and enjoy it.

There’s nothing like an afternoon walk on the beach to clear the fog in your head or the glory of a swim in the sea!

The people are happy!

Perhaps it’s all the Vitamin D from the sun but you will be hard pressed to find a friendlier crowd. From the smiling Congolese car guards to the neighbourhood chat groups where the rescue of lost pets is an almost daily occupation. It is amazing how many people will not hesitate to stop to help when needed.

The Courier is always receiving letters from residents thanking complete strangers for their acts of kindness. This week’s letter’s page includes a letter from Kym Bishop thanking the fire department for rescuing their kitten from the top of a tree. Cliches aside, the photo she sent us of the tough fireman comforting the worried little girl while the rescue operation was in progress is enough to restore your faith in humanity.

The food

Dive right in.

From Indian bunny chows to fresh seafood, the Dolphin Coast has so much great chow.

The launch of the Lifestyle Centre’s Eat Street has also brought the offerings up a notch with its uber trendy street cafe vibe.

The can-do attitude

The Entrepreneur 2018 group are ready to take on the business world with new strengths and skills.

Entrepreneurs everywhere you look! I love how creative our people are.

Sure, not all ideas work but failure is only part of the journey to success.

Almost every week our reporters bring you interesting locals with amazing business ideas and they are making them work.

From funky shorts and car washes to bakers and candlestick makers.

The Chamber’s annual Entrepreneur competition (of which we are proud sponsors) is doing great work in helping some of these hard-working people establish their businesses.

Gone are the days that you sat at home waiting to be hired.

North Coast residents are doing it for themselves.
