Perspective: Feels like freedom

I find it easier to connect with God in the ocean.

For me the hashtag to this year’s Ballito Pro, #FeelsLikeFreedom, speaks directly to the feeling of being out in the ocean.

Whether you are playing in the breakers, bobbing at back-line, watching the sunrise or experiencing the exhilaration of catching a wave, it all connects to a place in my spirit where my heart leaps and I feel the weight of everyday troubles lift easily.

I find it easier to connect with God in the ocean.

Diving into the breakers and treading water just beyond the break, the feeling of suspension in something so powerful and yet gentle and inviting is breath-taking.

It is as if the act of diving in and surrendering control to the immensity of the ocean almost perfectly mimics the way Father God invites us to surrender to his perfect will and in doing so he sets us free.

True freedom cannot be bought or sold and the human spirit hungers for it with an intensity that will not be satisfied with anything less then the genuine article.

The Ballito Pro is just about the biggest thing that happens in our ‘not so small anymore’ seaside town every year and being the official media partners to this pretty ‘sick’ week-long festival of stoke is a great privilege.

It is really rough for the journalists to have to visit the beach and soak in some winter rays. Perks of the job!

We also get to put together the official event mag.

The magazine is out now, so grab a copy and take it with you to The Pro to get all your favourite autographs in the centre spread.

The action kicks off this weekend with the O’Neill Rookie Rippers presented by SMTH Shapes (routing for you Cooper!), followed by the men’s and women’s Pro presented by O’Neill from next week Monday.

Its not all about surfing though, the Family Food Festival is at the Ballito Junction Monday and Tuesday and (my favourite) the free music concerts are at Salt Rock beach on Thursday and Friday nights.

Ballito really is the perfect place for a beach holiday in winter.

See you at the Pro!
