Letter: A lifetime of sorrow

"Night clubs, shebeens and bottle stores should never be permitted to trade within residential areas and I hope this incident is a wake-up-call to many who assume such areas are only for fun and not trouble" - Farzana Mohammed.

Farzana Mohammed of Tongaat writes:

As most of us are familiar with the disturbing incident that took place at Magagula Lounge, Hambanathi, concerning the 16-year-old boy who was allegedly beaten by the people of the tavern, I’d like to make reference to my letter “Can’t hear myself speak” (Courier, February 11) regarding the extreme peace disturbance in residential areas and included the so-called “night-club”.

Magagula Lounge has been an amusement and attraction to many people, mainly individuals residing out of the area but an absolute annoyance to most residents within the community due to its extreme peace disturbance.

Such businesses should be prohibited from trading within residential areas as they influence and disrupt the daily lives of naïve and vulnerable individuals!

Should we accept such trade in our communities, then we should expect a gruesome outcome!

Most clubs are known for notorious acts that lead to bigger crimes, which we are now suffering as a community.

So, why are these businesses even authorised to trade in a family environment?

If our kids are influenced by such surroundings, then what would become of the future generation of South Africa?

A few moments of indulgence led to a lifetime of sorrow and has left the Hambanathi community scarred for life.

Night clubs, shebeens and bottle stores should never be permitted to trade within residential areas and I hope this incident is a wake-up-call to many who assume such areas are only for fun and not trouble.

Kindly note that this letter was not composed to rub salt on the wounded or bereaved family but rather a lesson to be learned and an eye-opener to the public.

My deepest sympathies to bereaved family for their loss.
