eThekwini Cllr Geoff Pullan writes an open letter to our President:
Obviously, this is a difficult time for everyone.
My concern is the differing rules.
For example, construction of state, provincial and municipal projects have been given the go-ahead, as they are considered essential.
Generally, builders don’t work within a metre of each other, so that makes sense.
Private builders work in the same way, so allowing some to build and not others seems unfair.
The biggest worry is how construction workers get to and from their workplaces.
Public transport has the potential to increase contamination. This applies equally to public and private construction work.
Common sense is the main issue for all of South Africa. By now everyone must be aware of the dangers of the coronavirus. Covid-19 kills people.
Common sense says wash regularly and keep a distance. Our government has given everyone the facts, it’s now up to the people to think for themselves and behave sensibly.
As much as one would like to, one can’t legislate common sense.
I repeat, it’s now up to the people.
Businesses have to be responsible for how they operate in this C-19 world.
People understand that there will be more deaths.
This “nanny state” method of control takes responsibility away from the people.
It works for a while, but eventually the people resist and stop obeying authority.
In history the Greek, Roman, British and Soviet systems all lost their authority when the people took responsibility for themselves.
Democracy always wins out. People are programmed to make a plan. South Africans are known for this trait.
Mr President make a plan, and let us take on the responsibility of our lives. Let us get back to work, and work sensibly.
