Letter: Why double the markup?

"I do realise that some stores differ on price by small margins but this is ridiculous, so please just check the prices" - Gaydene Eastwood.

Gaydene Eastwood of Tinley Manor writes:

I feel that this should be brought to shoppers’ attention.

On Sunday I went to Tiffany’s Spar in Salt Rock for supplies and purchased fresh garlic, among other goods, at a price of R279.99 per kg.

We needed to go to Richmond Checkers and I checked the cost of the garlic there: it was R149.99 per kg, a huge difference of more than 100 percent.

I do realise that some stores differ on price by small margins but this is ridiculous, so please just check the prices!

Nicky Vorster of Tiffany’s replies:

As I’m sure everyone is aware, Spar’s staff were put in isolation for a two week period as a precaution and casual staff were brought in to ensure shopping convenience for our community.

Unfortunately, the casuals made a mistake with the garlic pricing. Spar’s staff are back, thankfully, and have rectified the error. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
