Letter: Theft is so easy

"He then presented a bank card and in addition to paying for the coke, asked for R3 000" - Colin Mitchell.

Colin Mitchell of Ballito writes:

Some months ago, my daughter’s handbag was stolen and her bank accounts cleaned out.

The withdrawals were all made at a local retailer. On Friday I saw just how easy this type of theft really is!

I was in a supermarket check-out queue and the guy in front of me had bought a coke. He then presented a bank card and in addition to paying for the coke, asked for R3 000. He took his cash and left.

I asked the cashier if the name on the card and his ID had been checked? No! she said – a bit bewildered that I had even asked.

I approached the manager – “Hmm,” says he, “I will look into it.”

Security lapse? Money laundering? Attractive commission on Hollywood betting vouchers? Bad management and training? – whatever – can a situation like this be acceptable?
