Letter: Bee keeping a dangerous hobby
"The bylaws that stipulate "hives or swarms of bees may not be kept within the municipal area in such a manner as to be a source of nuisance to neighbours or the neighbourhood" are a joke and this case proves it. By the time it's a nuisance it's too late" - Simone King.
Simone King of Ballito writes:
Responding to last week’s article “Frenzied bees kill dogs, parrot” (Courier August 28).
Why would anyone feel sorry for the “beekeeper”? Yes he cried, yes he tried to help but it was all too little too late.
The bylaws that stipulate “hives or swarms of bees may not be kept within the municipal area in such a manner as to be a source of nuisance to neighbours or the neighbourhood” are a joke and this case proves it.
By the time it’s a nuisance it’s too late.
How many people in our area have lost their dogs due to bees being kept irresponsibly?
That’s what happened here too, Mr Pitts was being irresponsible and it cost the lives of five dogs, one parrot and another dog hanging on for dear life at a local vet.
How could he not have known that something like a lawnmower could send the bees into a panic?
The worst part is that his hives were against the neighbour’s wall.
Beekeeping should not be allowed in a suburban area no matter what.
