Letter: Let’s live his legacy

"Paul did not use his struggle credentials to enrich himself or his family" - Nelson Puckree.

Nelson Puckree of Stanger Heights writes:

Another struggle hero is no more with the passing of Paul David.

Paul was ignored at all levels of government and people with no struggle credentials and who never saw the walls of prison were on the PR listings while he was asked to fight his ward and come to the council.

I believe it was like a stab in the back for a struggle hero, but as a true cadre he took it in his stride and stayed loyal to the ANC until his last breath.

Paul did not use his struggle credentials to enrich himself or his family like some of his comrades did, but rather died a selfless and humble man.

Today after his demise the ANC is singing his praises.

I had the privilege of sharing the platform with Paul David and Pravin Gordhan in a public meeting in 1991.

Paul also helped me to mobilise and organise a mass protest march meant to hand over a petition to the then Town Clerk challenging the unilateral appointment of a managing agent for the body corporate of KwaDukuza Mall.

Our only difference in opinion was on the location of said mall.

Today we do not have fearless and selfless Indian leaders but rather self-centered individuals hiding behind political parties as public servants.

I appeal to the Indian youth of today to get involved in politics and carry the baton that Paul David has left and continue with the struggle against corruption, nepotism, looting and indirect oppression in the form of affirmative action, race classification and inequality.

Lastly, I want to end by making a humble appeal to the KDM Council that Paul David’s struggle against oppression not go in vain.

Let’s honor him by naming the new park next to KDM Clinic “Paul Davadas David Legacy Park” I am certain that many, if not all the residents of Stanger will agree with me.
