Letter: Don’t waste this crisis

"I so wish as a nation we don't let this crisis go to waste. There are lessons we need to learn from it. One of them is that we all need each other" - Ntokozo Mcineka ka Makamu.

Ntokozo Mcineka ka Makamu of Groutville writes:

One thing I’ve learnt since this pandemic began its havoc in our country is that we might have our differences as a nation, but give us a crisis and you will see Ubuntu in action from our fellow citizens.

I so wish as a nation we don’t let this crisis go to waste. There are lessons we need to learn from it. One of them is that we all need each other.

During hard lockdown we were all scared and confused about the future.

The government tried its best under difficult circumstances, but as a people we prevailed.

While the virus was ravaging our communities, hunger also attacked as a result of job losses.

Communities became hopeless and were crying for help. As community volunteers we started knocking on the doors of NGOs, businesses and good people from all walks of life who were willing to assist those who were, and still are, affected mostly by hunger.

Because of this virus we lost friends, parents, relatives and we continue losing people in our communities.

May their souls rest in peace. We would like to appreciate our friends at Vision 153, Township Yogi, Home Grown Ballito and Natasha Oswald at Viral Kindness Ballito for everything you guys have done for communities like Groutville and many others.

May you continue to lend a helping hand whenever we knock on your doors.

We thank our community leaders for allowing us to help where we can in our communities, we appreciate them so much.

To everyone who assisted and continue to make a difference in our society, that’s the Ubuntu this country is known for.
