Letter: Working class always suffers

"The SABC board now wants to impose collection of TV licence fees on video-on-demand services like Netflix and satellite broadcasters like Multichoice's DSTV" - Vijay Surujpal.

Vijay Surujpal of Phoenix writes:

Mismanagement coupled with poor decision making has landed many state-owned enterprises in dire financial stress.

These institutions are totally reliant on the fiscus to continually bail them out at astronomical costs to the over-burdened taxpayer.

The SABC is such an enterprise that is always trying to keep its head above water. Let’s not forget the damage caused by Hlaudi Motsoneng when the 90% local and 10% international content was introduced in the broadcasting policy of the SABC.

Revenue through advertising was lost, further deepening the woes of the SABC.

The SABC board now wants to impose collection of TV licence fees on video-on-demand services like Netflix and satellite broadcasters like Multichoice’s DSTV.

The reason why the SABC finds itself in this dilemma is the obvious one of non-payment of licence fees and mismanagement.

The travesty is that someone has to foot the bill for any sort of incompetence.

That someone is always the industrious working class of this country, which is always at the receiving end when the budget needs to be balanced.

The universal question is for how long will this policy of milking the working class sustain itself?

It is definitely causing dissent, anger and dire apathy which is counterproductive to a developing nation.
