Letter: Enough is enough

"Over the years I have written many letters highlighting the possible outages and requested residents to be pro-active to deal with it. I even warned we must be prepared to expect outages lasting for days or even up to a week" - Cllr Madhun Sobram.

KwaDukuza / Ilembe DA caucus leader Cllr Madhun Sobram Sing writes:

After careful consideration I have decided to pen my thoughts on poor service delivery and regular electricity and water outages.

Over the years I have written many letters highlighting the possible outages and requested residents to be pro-active to deal with it. I even warned we must be prepared to expect outages lasting for days or even up to a week.

Communities are once more urged to have alternate supplies put in place to deal with emergencies. Many have heeded my call and have plan B in place to enjoy uninterrupted service.

While it might seem expensive subject to affordability there are many options.

Experience have taught over the years the situation is not getting better in fact it is getting worse.

While residents have every right to complain and vent their anger and frustration on various community platforms to put pressure on the municipalities to deliver basic services equally it is important to store water for a week’s supply same with electricity with alternate supplies.

Good planning, investing sufficiently on infrastructure, monitoring, evaluating and intervention at early stages can prevent regular outages.

The million-dollar question do we have the right people employed to mitigate the outages?

Compulsory skills audit must take place to ensure we have the right people in the right places or else the rot will manifest itself all the time adding to the already fed up community who religiously pay their dues in time.

Enough is enough.
