Letter: Industry is needed – the country is broke

"For this to happen, BBBEE must be removed - This dictate has proven not to work, and has served only to enrich a few connected "fat cats"." - George Dunn.

George Dunn of Sheffied Beach writes:

Earlier this month the President announced yet another recovery plan, to address unemployment. All of these plans hinge on spending money – it appears that he does not realise that the country is “broke”.

What we do need are local and international industrialists, who will bring back manufacturing.

For this to happen, BBBEE must be removed – This dictate has proven not to work, and has served only to enrich a few connected “fat cats”.

This business model along with all the red tape, has deterred investment, when we should be welcoming it with open arms and assisting them to set up businesses and factories.

Prior to 1994 we did not have this magnitude of unemployment, the major reason for this being that the country was an industrialised nation.

Textiles, shoe and many more industries employed an amount of people.

Alas the new government allowed cheap imports to flood the market, resulting in their closure and a huge loss in jobs.

An immediate intervention would be a bill instructing all government departments from top to bottom to only purchase – for example vehicles from local manufacturers, or from those who have assembly plants in South Africa.

In addition all purchases would have to be directly from the factory – no middleman – this would immediately reduce the cost, save money while also supporting local investors.

We can only live in hope that the President has the will to make changes that will benefit all the unemployed.
