Letter: Cherry on top of bad year

"The police have been useless to say the least. I found out this morning from a private security company that my car had still not been circulated as stolen despite opening a case on Saturday at Umhlali police station" - Charne Marr.

Charne Marr of Ballito writes:

My family had a terrible experience last week when our Toyota Hilux was stolen from Willard Beach parking lot.

The police have been useless to say the least.

I found out this morning from a private security company that my car had still not been circulated as stolen despite opening a case on Saturday at Umhlali police station.

It has been a disaster of a day trying to get answers from the station.

A Col. Makatini just puts the phone down on me. Unfortunately, my vehicle was uninsured as I had to cancel insurance due to Covid.

There has been complete negligence in handling this case. We are from the Eastern Cape.

My husband and two boys relocated this January as he was offered a teaching post at a top school.

This past weekend has left my family traumatised to the point that my husband has tendered his resignation and will return home at the end of this term.

My two boys are flying home as soon as they finish their last exam.

This has really been the cherry on top of a terribly trying year.

Saps provincial spokesman, Col Thembeka Mbele replies:

A case of theft of a vehicle is being investigated by Umhlali Saps after a vehicle was stolen by unknown suspects at Ballito on 7 November from where it was parked.

The matter is still under investigation.

The allegations levelled at the police officers are not true.

The vehicle was circulated by Umhlali Saps and all means to locate the vehicle and the suspects were made but unfortunately the vehicle was not found.

We would like to advise the complainant to liaise with the investigating officer or the branch commander to ask about the developments of the case.

The allegation that the station commander put down the phone is not true.
