Letter: Pleas fall on death ears

"Sheffield and Salt Rock Residents continue to risk their lives every day on roads in the ward that can only be described as deplorable" - Privi Makhan.

Ward 22 councillor Privi Makhan writes:

A year ago, a portion of Barrier Lane and Colwyn Drive in Sheffield Beach collapsed.

Red tape and internal municipal processes have delayed critical repairs and an environmental disaster is imminent.

This past weekend’s rains further compromised the washaway and undermined critical infrastructure including water, sewer and fibre lines.

Siza Water were exceptional, as always, in their efforts to ensure that the undermined sewer line was repaired.

They sprang into action and cleaned up the area in order to combat any odours and created a secure temporary support for their infrastructure.

Talk about quality service!

Sheffield and Salt Rock Residents continue to risk their lives every day on roads in the ward that can only be described as deplorable.

Attempts to get the Department of Transport to repair roads within their reserve, i.e., the P474, P228 and the P330, are also proving to be futile.

Will it take lives to be lost, for the authorities to take our communities needs seriously?

Our citizens deserve better. KDM spokesman Sipho Mkize said the Civil Engineering Unit has informed him that a contractor will be onsite in the week of 15 January 2021 to do a complete rehabilitation of Colwyn Drive/Barrier Lane.

The road will remain closed until a contractor is appointed.

On the matter of P474, P228 and P330 the Civil Engineering Unit will cascade the complaint to Department of Transport for actioning.
