Letter: Litter in Stanger is bad

"I think the Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender, is doing a wonderful job and her hands must be full. However, I am sure everyone sees there is a litter problem" - James Turner.

James Turner of Blythedale writes:

This is an open letter to the Mayor and municipality.

Our family is new to the area, having moved to be closer to Durban from Empangeni where we have stayed for the past 23 years.

This is a lovely area, and I can say that the development is skyrocketing from the time that Gateway was just a Shell station and a Sharks Board.

Ballito is coming along nicely and the Dolphin Coast, including Salt Rock and Shaka’s Rock and Zimbali, are looking nice.

However, the bustling town of Stanger leaves a few things to be desired.

It is indeed a busy town; you see many shops that you would only see in the “out of the way” malls on many streets.

I think the Mayor, Cllr Dolly Govender, is doing a wonderful job and her hands must be full. However, I am sure everyone sees there is a litter problem.

The only way to tackle these problems is just to keep the municipality workers busy.

You can put more concrete bins here and there if people will only use them.

You can watch people drop trash and bottles right on the street just metres away from bins.

You must know they don’t take much pride in their town.

But even if you are looking for a rubbish “skip” to deposit a quantity of rubbish, or a place to recycle the loads and loads of plastic in our groceries, there is no place to be found easily.

A most shocking scene is to the left as exiting the R74 going to the nice new mall.

That area at the end of the street looks like someone is making a land fill.

Surely this can’t be legal?
