Letter: Negative effect of ban

Although opinions differ when it comes to alcohol and repercussions, one has to identify that it is not alcohol that is the problem, it's users who lack responsibility for their actions.

Josha Daniel of Umhlali writes:

Twenty percent of wineries are out of business; 120 000 jobs already lost, 800 SMME and micro liquor manufacturers facing closure; and 90% of craft breweries in danger of closing (Maverick 2020).

In the midst of this pandemic and debates on vaccine and wonder drugs, one shouldn’t lose focus on current affairs as well.

The ban of alcohol has taken its toll on many stakeholders in South Africa.

With escalating projection of business closure and job loss, is only welcoming poverty.

The need to lift the ban of alcohol is warranted urgently to salvage job loss, business closure.

Although opinions differ when it comes to alcohol and repercussions, one has to identify that it is not alcohol that is the problem, it’s users who lack responsibility for their actions.

We cannot stereotype, alcohol brings destruction and irresponsibility.

We need to acknowledge that stricter laws are needed to ensure responsibility and accountability when it comes to alcohol.

We urge government to look at the negative impact the alcohol ban is having on our economy and its various contributors, reconsider their decision and let’s help rebuild our land.
