There seems to have been a bit of confusion on what my/our motives were when fixing potholes (in reference to last week’s front page article) around the old Ballito residential area.
I am very concerned at the lack of municipal services, the lack of will to have these basic services carried out, which we pay for in our rates and taxes.
My grandson and his friend were looking for a holiday job in December.
I volunteered to pay for their labour and help find a sponsor for the ready made tar to fix potholes (sponsor was Pick n Pay Ballito owner, Michael Lafferty)
We did not do this work to help the municipality in fixing our roads, but to embarrass them by showing them that even 2 schoolboys could do better in their holidays than what they are achieving full-time with our money.
After a couple of days at work the boys were confronted by the municipality to tell them they could now stop as the municipality would continue with the work, which they did for a few days then disappeared.
The boys went back and completed some more potholes.
There are still hundreds of potholes throughout Ballito which need repairing.
I believe strongly that the ratepayers are being ripped off and this will not be rectified by a whole lot of hot air and WhatsApp messages, but by getting up and proactively doing something about the problem.
One example being a tax boycott.
We have a whole lot of lawyers in our community, why is this option not being interrogated (it has been done legally in other towns in our country)?
People are becoming impatient with continuous excuses on why work and services are not being carried out.
