Letter: Beach trashed last weekend

I honestly do not mind citizens enjoying our beautiful beaches in a respectful way, but it is the uncivilised nature and abuse of public space that offends, including unlawful fires that kills the grass.

Pieter van Wyk writes:

I took my 9-year old son for a swim on Monday morning at Salt Rock beach and was appalled at the scene awaiting us.

Besides drinking in public and broken glass still being a problem, I noticed that marquees are now popping up over weekends for private functions.

I honestly do not mind citizens enjoying our beautiful beaches in a respectful way, but it is the uncivilised nature and abuse of public space that offends, including unlawful fires that kills the grass.

Everybody is receiving notice of rates increases while I feel that we are not getting enough back at the current rates.

Do we need to give new momentum to the rates boycott?

KDM spokesperson Sipho Mkhize responds:

I will forward these images to the relevant department, however, I appeal to members of the community to make use of Mr Moses Faya’s WhatsApp Contact at 082 326 0739, to raise burning issues as per his appeal.

This behavior in the pictures is unacceptable.

KDM Community Safety BU Director Moses Faya responds:

The Community Safety Business Unit do monitor and direct all types of complaints that are reported and received during the weekends and after hours and go to the extent of facilitating in getting SAPS to attend or assist in any crime scene if the matter or complaint was brought to our attention.

This particular matter was never brought to our attention neither to our Control Room Centre.

It is not this Business Unit practice or ways of conducting its business or mandate to avoid or ignore or shy away from responding to its legal obligation.

We appeal that citizens use our official communication means and Call Centre numbers: as per our website.
