Letter: Not all violence is visible

Violence against women is a multifaceted problem that cannot be solved with a quick fix. 2020/2021 quarterly crime statistics reflects a 5% increase in gender-based violence.

South Africa has seen an increase in various elements that constitute gender-based violence with 193 murders in domestic violence, 12 218 rapes (October to December 2020), and 4 900 rapes taking place at victim’s homes or the home of the rapist.

Not all violence is visible

Contributing factors differ relating to culture, poverty, religion, children and society opinions.

Awareness campaigns and information is a must to bring change and eliminate the myths.

As we celebrate Freedom Day, let us acknowledge being humane and lend support to women who have been victims.

Be the voice for the oppressed, awareness is empowerment and with empowerment comes independence and not dependence.
