Ward 6 Cllr Tammy Colley writes:
Freedom Day is celebrated every year, but we should ask ourselves what are we celebrating?
I remember April 27, 1994 as South Africans of all races for the first time lined up to cast their votes in the first democratic elections.
There was a feeling of excitement that I have only ever paralleled to World Cup Fever as far as nation building goes.
No one minded the snaking lines that ran around the sports fields of schools, because we were excited to be part of the history of our country.
We were excited to be free.
It was a celebratory, even party like atmosphere.
Now people are queuing for R350 a month.
How is that free?
Freedom is a right every one of us have.
We have the right to speak, act, think and associate.
Importantly, freedom is a right, not a privilege granted by the government.
One of the most important rights we all have gained since that historic day in April 1994, is the right to vote. Use it wisely.
The first step is to ensure you are registered to vote. If you would like to check where you are registered, https://check.da.org.za is a helpful site.

I don’t mind standing in the queue to cast my vote for good, clean governance.
