Letter: Choking smoke

"The municipal rates and estate levies we pay are the same as for the rest of this North Coast community yet we have to choke on this smoke" - Emelia Stanton.

Emelia Stanton of Seaward Estate writes:

What is an ordinary person to do when every evening the smoke and noise from the squatter camp near Umhlali club and Caledon Estate chokes the air, forcing us to close all our windows and doors?

From 6pm to about 9pm fires are lit to cook as there is no power or infrastructure to support this unplanned, unauthorised development. (I wonder where their toilets are? That is the next problem.)

The municipal rates and estate levies we pay are the same as for the rest of this North Coast community yet we have to choke on this smoke.

No! This is not what makes for a happy situation.

Tempers are brewing with discontent.

The municipality or Red Ants need to address this before it spills over.

It’s completely unacceptable to live like this in a town that charges us exorbitant property rates without protecting us from noise and smoke by invaders.

You want our money, you need to protect us!

I challenge the authorities to do something to change this unacceptable development.
