Letter: We could be stranded!

"The remainder of the road is showing signs of following suit, which will leave us residents stranded." - Carey Alexander.

Carey Alexander of Sheffield writes:

We were informed that KwaDukuza would send someone out to assess the damage today (Monday).

The blatant negligence is astounding.

The remainder of the road is showing signs of following suit, which will leave us residents stranded.

Residents are rallying together to put plans in action to withhold rates payments as the municipality do not provide services to the area.

KDM spokesman Sipho Mkhize replies:

A number of services have been exposed by the wash away and KDM has contacted the other entities whose services are exposed to attend to these urgently.

KDM is sourcing a service provider, this process will be concluded on May 20.

In the interim the area will remain barricaded and only one (1) lane can be utilised.

KDM is monitoring this area daily to assess if there are further damages. KDM apologises for any inconvenience caused.

Ward councilor Privi Makhan replies:

Following last Saturday’s excessive rain and the subsequent damage to Colwyn Drive and other areas in the ward, I have requested a detailed timeframe on the commencement of repairs.

The KDM civils department has conducted assessments.

Repairs to Colwyn Drive are most critical, as the potential for residents from Number 37 onwards being cut off is a very real possibility.

I am perturbed that the department does not deem the safety of residents and ratepayers a priority.

The department must provide a detailed timeframe and scope in order for me to effectively communicate this back to the community.
