George Dunn of Sheffield Beach is curious:
Whilst passing through the entrance to King Shaka Airport recently, I had a moment of wonder.
I wondered what had become of the bronze statue of King Shaka?
When the airport opened in May 2010, there was naturally a buzz around the place and much interest in the artwork depicting King Shaka outside a Zulu domed hut, and some cows.
This of course coming at a huge price to the taxpayer, but portrayed KZN and was an eye-catching piece of work for any visitor.
Not long after the opening however some “very important person” decided that the statue of the King did not portray him as fierce enough, so it must be removed and replaced with an appropriate King Shaka, obviously at even more expense.
So, here we are 10 years later, and what have we got? A Zulu hut and a couple of cows.
So, where is our fierce king, and more to the point, where is our very expensive original bronze king?
Let’s hope it has not made its way to the scrapyard and the proceeds disappeared.
