Letter: Behind the curve

"Lack of foresight in provision of backup power for critical pump-station operations and the attendant remote control functions seem to bedevil the municipality's purpose" - Ian Coates.

Former Dolphin Coast councillor Ian Coates writes:

In the event that the iLembe District Municipality’s maintenance spend is in fact a mere 48% of its allocation and budget, that smacks of inadequate planning and insufficient capacity to execute (iLembe denies blame for water supply, Courier, June 18).

Lack of foresight in provision of backup power for critical pump-station operations and the attendant remote control functions seem to bedevil the municipality’s purpose.

The Mayor’s reports on measures being taken to address these problems, while encouraging, seem to be well “behind the curve” in terms of prompt response to problems that have been evident for a considerable time.

Before iLembe seriously thinks that it can simply “take over” operations from Siza Water in 2028, (and continue to deliver adequate and acceptable services to KwaDukuza South), I believe that a serious restructuring and upskilling of operations at iLembe must be addressed.

The current and recent performance(s) of iLembe re its water and sanitation obligations raises several flags, as has been reported in your newspaper.
