Letter: Business as usual?

"This past week saw both a full council sitting and an EXCO sitting unfold, with not a single item on either one of these agendas speaking to the effect that the KZN unrest has had on the local KwaDukuza economy" - Cllr Privi Makhan.

Ward 22 Cllr Privi Makhan writes:

Last week, government announced that the death toll from the week long, violent KZN unrest was revised down from 258 to 251.

A glaring symptom of government’s failure to intervene during a crisis, this is already one death too many.

While the financial loss to the KZN economy is still being quantified, torched factories still smoulder and noxious chemical spills permeate our environment, it appears to be business as usual at local government level.

Tasked with the critical functions of providing basic services and boosting the local economy, among other important functions, local government ought to be at the helm of “picking up the pieces”.

This past week saw both a full council sitting and an EXCO sitting unfold, with not a single item on either one of these agendas speaking to the effect that the KZN unrest has had on the local KwaDukuza economy.

The business community simply cannot be left flailing, as a result of the destruction caused by political opportunists.

The Democratic Alliance in iLembe has written to the municipal manager and the CFO to urgently consider various relief mechanisms for affected business owners, in order to address the economic crisis that is unfolding.
